PHIL RICHARDS COMMISSIONED BY GOVERNMENT OF CANADA TO PAINT PORTRAIT OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II

Mira Godard Gallery is pleased to announce that PHIL RICHARDS has been selected to paint a new portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in honour of her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

This is the first Canadian portrait of the Queen since 1976. The new portrait will be unveiled to Canadians at a special ceremony during the Diamond Jubilee. On February 6, 2012, Queen Elizabeth will mark the 60th anniversary of her reign. She is the second sovereign to reach this mark in Canadian history, the other being the Queen's great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria in 1897.

His public commissioned work includes portraits of Bob Rae, Former Premier of Ontario; Arthur Labatt, Chancellor of the University of Western Ontario; Rose Patten, Chair of the Board of Governors of the University of Toronto; Cinedom, Cologne, Germany.

Richards' work can also be found in hundreds of private, corporate and public collections throughout North America and Europe including the Art Gallery of Ontario; Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery, Owen Sound, Ontario; Confederation Centre of the Arts, P.E.I.
