In printmaking, I essentially use the same process as in painting with one important exception: to try, with sensitivity to the medium to emphasize what printing can do best - better than say, painting or collaging or watercolour or drawing or whatever … Otherwise, the artist expresses the same vision in graphics that he does in his other work.

ROBERT MOTHERWELL (1915-1991) was born in Aberdeen, Washington. He finished a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at Stanford University in 1932; Graduate School of Philosophy at Harvard University in 1937 and Graduate School of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University, New York in 1940.
Motherwell had his first solo exhibition in the United States at Peggy Guggenheim's Art of this Century Gallery in New York City in 1944, and went on to become one of the leading artists of the Abstract Expressionist movement. A major retrospective of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965. Robert Motherwell passed away in 1991 at his home in Connecticut.
