LINDEE CLIMO: Covering the Oldies: New Paintings
Musicians have long covered the work of other musicians, reviving and reconstructing in tribute and in quest. Working from Renaissance paintings allows me to visit the minds of painters who are as fascinated by the newness of oil painting as we are today by virtual realities. For many years now, I have been reading nightly from journals and texts of my father's war that were written by participants before they knew the outcome. Do this for any length of time and that time and its questions set up a spot in the brain, a virtual reality to travel to. So it is for me working from Renaissance paintings. Covering them with pieces of my life ensures a sweet level of adrenaline as I visit with Simone Martini, Baldovinetti, Lochner, Bosch, and Heemskerck.
