NATHAN BIRCH: NEW PAINTINGS

May 25 - June 15, 2019
Overview

Looking back through the nearly two decades that I have painted the landscapes of my surroundings, I've realized that my work has likely caused, albeit unintentionally and perhaps even unconsciously, a degree of uneasiness in viewers.

My goal has always been to study my surroundings, to interpret and express that understanding in the most sincere and personal way I could. This act took the form of painting landscapes across multiple canvases, two or three panels (referred to as diptychs or triptychs), while allowing the separation between each canvas to play a role in the overall painting. However, by dividing these Canadian landscapes, by splitting and separating that which we are so accustomed to seeing whole, I've come to understand that I have caused discomfort along with comfort; tension along with peace. And yet it is precisely because of this new awareness that I now choose to paint - to interpret and express my surroundings - with a fresh sense of clarity gained from seeing my work, my past and myself, in a new light.
