STEPHEN HUTCHINGS: THROUGH THE WINDOW: New Paintings

February 8 - 29, 2020
Overview

Each of my pictures tells a story. Perhaps it is a story about relationship or about a mystery or something unusual-or perhaps it is just about something beautiful. Individually the paintings in this exhibition talk about one of these special moments, one of life's little stories. Taken together, they portray the larger world that lies "out there", the world that I see through the "window" of my art practice.

Stephen Hutchings, 2020

On Saturday, February 8th, 2020 Mira Godard Gallery was pleased to open an exhibition of new paintings by STEPHEN HUTCHINGS. The artist was present.

STEPHEN HUTCHINGS was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He received a B.A. in Art History from the University of Toronto and attended the Ontario College of Art in the early 1970s.

Creating timeless and evocative  landscape paintings, Hutchings uses materials that emulate nature itself - charcoal from burned trees, glazes that mimic rays of sunlight and paint colours from nature’s palette.
Conveying a sense of mystery, his works encourage viewers to reflect on the continuity of life.

STEPHEN HUTCHINGS’ work has been featured in a number of museum exhibitions over the last few decades, most recently, a solo exhibition, "Landscape Tales" organized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in 2018, "Landscapes For the End of Time" organized by the Glenbow Museum, Calgary (travelling) in 2012-13 and "Fury at the Canadian Museum of Nature", Ottawa (travelling) in 2012-13 and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, Banff in 2014. His work can be found in numerous museum, corporate and private collections in Canada, the United States and Europe including Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Museum London, Tom Thompson Memorial Art Gallery, The Banff Centre, University of Toronto, Air Canada, Department of Foreign Affairs, Four Seasons Hotel, Milestones Restaurants, RBC, Scotiabank, Stikeman Elliott, Sun Life, Swiss Bank (Canada).
